In This video I show the various CFL Grow Lights that I have used the past few years and compare. They are all from local stores such as Menards and Home Depot. I mention the prices and light output for each. I also show hydroponic tomatoes that are a little over 2 weeks old. The largest bulb I show is the maximum length that the fixture can hnadle that I built in a previous video. My work in progress: www.tomorrowsgarden.net Buy your veggie seeds now guys. It’s cheap insurance. The stuff on the store shelves may not always be there.

    who i assume to be your wife is correct, plants do need there dark time. plants obviously derive their energy from light, but roots develop far better in the dark. im not sure if that’s considered plant sleep but it makes for happy plants!

    have you ever tried induction grow lights? 166.6 lumens per watt are 4-5 higher then standard fluorescent.

    we’ve been using the 100 watt for veg in a small tent and then add a second one for flower/bud. good canopy penetration as alot of light gets to the lower leaves. there’s a video on youtube for indagro if you’ve never seen them. peace

    Great video! I like your version of the grow light. Thanks for making the video. You guys did a wonderful job. We live in New England too, so I’ll check back for other gardening tips you might have. We’re newbies, and we’re frugal too:)

    @SleestaksRule word thanks for the tip, i’ve been using 3 26/ 1 29 watt CFL’s and the temp tends to change 3-4 degrees when they’re on, the plants seem to be totally cool with it, i’ve got some forget-me-nots that are around 4 -5 days old and they’ve already got two new sets of leaves each, my coleus already has a branch developing even though it hardly has a stem. this is my favorite part of gardening, i love right when they pop out of the ground and grow like craaaazy.

    20. Nov, 2010

    @scubacell They give off a little heat but it’s in a large open area and usually a little drafty. I imagine in a closet it might build up heat. When I run my 400watt Metal Halides they give off loads of heat and actually help heat the room in the winter.

    excellent video man, you are a guru of the grow light. i share your fascination with both plants and light bulbs, i have some tomatoes, basil, assorted flowers and a watermelon vine (gonna try really hard to make it work). and i’ve been trying to find the best light setup possible for my room. i’m growing in around a 3×3 space that’s about 6 feet tall (it’s a corner of my closet, i lack a yard BUT don’t have to pay electricity ;) ) and i’m really worried about heat. do any of em get super hot?

    Did you say $34.99 for the larger grow light? If not, how much did you pay?

    do all those bulbs use a regular light socket, or o the big ones require a special one? Thanx

    20. Nov, 2010

    Have you tried the 400 watt inductions.? With my quantum meter I measured 1,200 micromoles @ the leave with PAR readings between 600-700 nm and peaks in both the UV and IR spectrums. I had never heard of them until I saw them on youtube but they are not widely known from what i’ve seen. Probably because Home Depot or Lowes doesn’t carry them.

    @pvampire I did them in dirt. It took 21 days from seed to full sized radish under T5 lights. Very fast.

  37. pvampire

    20. Nov, 2010

    Are you growing your radishes hydropoinically, and if so what kind of medium are you using? I’ve thought about growing radishes for some time but have no clue what kind of medium to use. Rockwool seems to expenisive.

    @brynpav u should try plasma induction, more penetration (lol) then flouro induction, budded one plant under only 45w plasma and got almost three ozs

    f you really want ‘the best’ then just move into induction grow lights. higher lumens then CFL, produces UV and IR and they last 100,000 hrs compared to CFL @ 15,000 hrs. I’ve been using a 100 watt for clone and vegging and 2 of the 400 watt for flower and bud very nicely. I’ve not had any spider mites since I went to these since they run so much cooler and the electric bill dropped over 1/2.

    @supersoup3 I made the fixture in one of my other videos. The part with the dual light is made by Patriot Lighting and available at Menards. Lowes and Home Depot don’t carry it.

  46. supersoup3

    20. Nov, 2010

    where did you get the dual light fixture? I can only seem to find the single cfl reflectors.

    I hope my tomatoes look as good as yours :)

    @bl33ditout

    LOL totally lost it laughing at that part!
    But in all honesty it was a great video thank you.
    I now know what lightbulbs to consider in my garden.

    Currently I have a Watermelon plant and a Lemon Cucumber Plant.
    I totally under estimated the actual garden space you need for such plants.
    That watermelon plant vein is like 6 feet tall!

    @bl33ditout

    I totally lost it laughing when hearing that exact same part.
    I was like “Whoa!”

    A+ For the video though, iv learnd what lightbulb to consider for my Garden :)
    Im currently growing a Watermelon plant along with a Lemon Cumber plant.
    I totally underestimated the size needed for such growing lol
